Position Summary
Design, develop, and build complex tooling, fixtures, and machine systems using SolidWorks and hands-on machining techniques. Apply strong knowledge of machining and machine design to deliver safe, robust, and manufacturable solutions. Collaborate with engineering and machinists while supporting fabrication through both direct machining and delegation to CNC resources.
Principal Responsibilities
• Design tooling, fixtures, and machine components/systems using SolidWorks (3D models and detailed drawings).
• Lead design and build of complex machine systems and automation projects from concept through validation.
• Develop machine concepts including mechanisms, motion systems, and structural components.
• Incorporate safety features into designs including lockout/tagout provisions, guarding, and light curtains.
• Support integration of controls including basic PLC interfaces, sensors, actuators, and automation components.
• Translate concepts into manufacturable designs with consideration for machining processes, tolerances, and materials.
• Machine and fabricate components as required using mills, lathes, EDM, and other tool room equipment.
• Coordinate fabrication through requests to CNC machinists and external/internal resources as needed.
• Provide clear prints, models, and instructions to support efficient manufacturing.
• Assemble, test, debug, and validate tooling and machine systems.
• Work closely with engineers, machinists, and technicians to refine designs and resolve technical issues.
• Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications.
• Support continuous improvement through design for manufacturability, reliability, and safety.
• Maintain accurate documentation, models, and drawing revisions.
• Adhere to safety, quality, and company policies and standards.
• Provide technical direction for machining strategy, machine design, and system integration.
• Mentor and guide technicians and machinists on design intent, fabrication methods, and best practices.
• Drive innovation in machine design, automation, and process efficiency improvements.
• Interface with external vendors and machine builders to support equipment development and integration.
Education / Experience Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent required. Journeyman Tool & Die Maker or equivalent experience preferred.
Specialized Skills / Other Requirements
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, and detailing)
• Hands-on machining experience (CNC and manual equipment)
• Working knowledge of machine design, mechanisms, and automation systems
• Understanding of PLC-controlled systems, sensors, actuators, and industrial controls
• Knowledge of safety standards including lockout/tagout, guarding, and light curtains
• Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and GD&T
• Ability to direct and support machining work across multiple resources
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
TRAVEL REQUIRED: This office/shop hybrid position is based in Wyomissing, PA. Occasional travel to Mexico may be required to help install/troubleshoot equipment.
