Position Summary

The R&D Technician will work closely with technical team members in the Balloon group including R&D engineers, quality, and operations to develop products from design through customer delivery. The R&D Technician should be capable of identifying and resolving process issues related to machinery, material, and specifications. Being able to execute (under engineering supervision) validations/ qualifications of processes and machinery. Capable of create basic drawings and interfacing with machines shops to produce tooling/fixtures needed on the production floor. This role is expected to deliver projects with quality on time and within budget.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on product from design phase through customer delivery, including modifying existing designs or developing new designs.
  • Source or develop all materials / tooling required for designs.
  • Primary technical resource for balloon forming, bonding, trimming, braiding, and coiling machines 
  • Work with Engineers to clarify or resolve problems and develop designs.
  • Ability to manage assigned product development efforts including interacting with customers, communicating with vendors and suppliers, writing procedures, recording, and analyzing data, building product, and providing technical support to build product.
  • Develop, document, and build prototype products, fixtures, and tooling with minimal to no engineering assistance; and develop processes to produce balloons, balloon catheters, and subassemblies according to customer design, performance, and quality specifications; on time and in budget.
  • Prepare component, subassembly or finished product drawings and documents.
  • Initiate and document development assembly processes for use in production work instructions.
  • Support product transfer from R&D to pilot production to full production through training and process development.
  • Perform and coordinate production and testing of development projects.
  • Maintain lab notebook practices in accordance with company quality procedures.
  • Maintain lab supplies and cleanliness.
  • Track project costs, material lead times, scrap rates, and product delivery schedules.
  • Develop bills of materials and assembly method, and update SAP paperwork.
  • Writing, monitoring, and reviewing test protocols. 
  • Gage reliability and repeatability, and equipment qualification.
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly.
  • Implement cost reductions by working closely with Production to reduce scrap/waste and improve efficiencies.

Education / Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, highly preferred.
  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field, preferred.
  • 2 years of experience designing, developing, testing, and assembling catheters, balloon catheters, or catheter subassemblies, developing, and improving production processes, required.
  • Proficient in MS Office Products and SAP or similar MRP/ERP system, required.
  • Direct experience working with Balloon Formers, Bonders, Pleaters/Folders, Braiders and Coilers, highly preferred.

Specialized Skills / Other Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and work instructions in English 
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints / technical drawings.
  • Ability to create technical drawings
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Proficient with Windows applications: Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize and work independently. 
  • Proven track record of managing project deliverables
  • Proficiency in statistical process control and metrology.
  • Good working knowledge of lean manufacturing processes related to medical device manufacturing.
