Position Summary

The R&D Manager will lead new product development and execution for the R&D projects within AEM Airway portfolio. The Manager is expected to partner with Marketing and the extended cross-functional teams to drive the successful identification, planning and execution of R&D projects by holding assigned technical/project leaders and teams accountable to commitments, resourcing, milestones, timelines, and budgets. The Manager will directly manage, mentor, and develop R&D engineers in these key activities.

Principal Responsibilities

•    Provide leadership to the Airway NPD team, to ensure that new products are identified and delivered to meet the strategic plan goals and metrics. 
•    Responsible for leading ideation and product/project pipeline generation for Airway category, utilizing internal and external technical resource bandwidth, industry tools, idea sessions, and other methods to capture and value opportunities.
•    Serve as engineering lead and/or technical expert/SME in design/product development; Coach/mentor and promote best practices across the entire concept to commercialization activities to strengthen R&D departmental competencies. 
•    Conducts and/or oversees product development activities including concept development, design, prototyping, testing (verification and validation), risk management and documentation. 
•    Develops strong partnerships with Marketing, Clinical Medical Affairs (CMA), Sales and clinical users to thoroughly understand current clinical needs and identify unmet needs, in order to deliver the Airway business strategies.
•    Represent R&D and/or lead gating of business plans and projects from idea pool/pipeline/feasibility through execution statuses according to the portfolio plan for Airway. 
•    Oversee the team(s) responsible for coordination of the introduction/transfer of products into manufacturing operations. Ensure operational deliverables and readiness measures are incorporated in the project plans, and risks are clearly identified. Work closely with the BU Operations Liaisons, where applicable.
•    Partner with R&D Sustaining Engineering to ensure support, alignment and continuity across the entire product lifecycle.
•    Ensure project plans, charters, schedules and other R&D project specific activities are properly identified and approved. Lead assessment of project technical complexity, feasibility, scope, cost estimates, business impacts and risks. Ensure project milestone planning, problem solving and risk mitigation are established with the core team.
•    Coordinate and/or oversee technical activities with external co-development partners, contractors, consultants, suppliers (as applicable).
•    Work closely with Finance and senior leadership in the planning and forecasting of project and capital budgets.
•    Provide regular reporting of metrics and status updates to stakeholders and senior leadership.
•    Provide other departmental support as required by management.
•    Ensure projects are developed and documented compliant with Teleflex’s Quality system.
•    Adhere to and ensure the compliance of Teleflex’s Code of Ethics, all Company policies, rules, procedures and housekeeping standards.
 

Education / Experience Requirements

•    Minimum education engineering/technical bachelor’s degree or equivalent, advanced degree preferred
•    Minimum 10 years of design/product development required; 5 years of engineering management preferred
•    Medical Device, Pharmaceuticals or other highly regulated industry experience required
•    Proven track record of successful product design experience; comprehensive concept development through commercialization of products
•    Demonstrated clear communication skills across executive levels, functions and geographically diverse teams

•    Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
•    Ability to coach and mentor engineers, project management colleagues and other professionals.
•    Serve as a mentor for engineering personnel on product design. 
•    Learns the strengths and interests of staff members to ensure work assignments are most efficiently distributed and managed while challenging engineers to grow and improve across all experience levels.
•    Very strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficient in leading teams as well as influencing cross-functionally resulting in the ability to gain alignment and drive consensus on project decisions.
•    Self-starter who is passionate and motivated to lead new product development.
•    Flexible and adaptable; excellent time management and capable of prioritizing for timely execution.
