Position Summary

The Sr. R&D Toolmaker’s primary job function is to manufacture/fabricate precision jigs, fixtures, test equipment, gauging and product prototypes supporting new product development for R&D.  This position supports all phases of new product development from concept through product launch, working closely with Mechanical Design and Engineering departments.

Principal Responsibilities

•    Safely operate tool room equipment at a high-level of competency including manual and CNC machines: mills, lathes, grinders, saws, drill press and misc. hand tools and inspection instruments
•    Manufacture/build and assemble jigs, fixtures test equipment and product prototypes working closely with Design and Engineering functions for new product development
•    Leverage expert knowledge and experience of manufacturing processes, design for manufacturing machining technology and materials in projects
•    Acts as subject matter expert for R&D in subtractive machining capabilities and technology
•    Research new machining technologies for R&D 
•    Schedules and coordinates tasks and projects for machine shop including documentation of work completed 
•    Horizontally provide machining and fabrication support across the organization as needed
•    Facilitate procurement of jigs, fixtures, gages, and auxiliary equipment with vendors on design projects as necessary 
•    Ability to work from minimal to detailed instructions/sketches/drawings on machining tasks/projects
•    Aptitude to use experience, shop math, formulas, ingenuity, and judgment to fabricate tooling when no design is available  
•    Responsible for overall shop safety including safe operation of machines and maintenance 
•    Responsible for maintaining shop inventory of raw materials, fasteners, cutting tools and supplies     

Education / Experience Requirements

•    Associates degree, technical diploma, preferred and/or apprenticeship in Machining Tool & Die technologies 
•    10+ years of experience in the design and development of medical devices
•    5+ years of experience creating CNC programs using CAD and CAM software, preferable Solidworks
•    5+ years hands-on experience setting up and running multi-axis CNC equipment
•    Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. Adobe Acrobat

Specialized Skills / Other Requirements

•    Advanced knowledge of technologies related to catheter design and construction, such as extrusion, injection molding, adhesive, thermal bonding, welding, grinding, and reflow processing
•    Expert knowledge of manufacturing technologies: milling, drilling, turning, EDM, deburring, welding, broaching, stamping, extrusion, injection molding, reflowing, vapor honing, etc.
•    Knowledge and expertise in CAD/CAM programming for CNC milling and lathe programs
•    Experience machining a variety of materials (cutting speeds/feeds) for metals, plastics and composites   
•    Ability to set up and safely operate a variety of manual CNC equipment in tool room, mills, lathes, drill press, etc.
•    Advanced knowledge and comprehension of Engineering Drawings and ASME Y14.5
•    Proficient problem-solving skills and high mechanical aptitude
•    Capability and willingness to effectivity contribute to cross-functional teams and projects 
•    Expert proficiency in managing dynamic workloads and prioritizing tasks efficiently with minimal guidance 
•    Experience to troubleshoot technical problems and quickly make changes as needed 
•    Advanced skills and knowledge to machine and inspect work to precision tolerances ±.0001”
•    Working knowledge of industry standards for medical device design ISO 13485 and 21 CFR Part 820
•    Working knowledge of additive manufacturing methods
